Here we will show you how to easily clean and repaint a worn and sun-faded convertible top. In the guide below we use the products included in our Convertible Cleaning and Repainting Kit. Please note that the nature of the textile dye is such that it is only possible to change the color to a darker shade than the original color.
Step 1:
Scrape away dirt and mold as best you can from folds and seams.
Clean the roof thoroughly with the supplied textile cleaner, Carpet & Upholstery Cleaner , scrub with the included cleaning brush.
After scrubbing the surface, let the cleaner sit for 10-15 minutes. This will allow the cleaner to dissolve and separate the dirt from the textile fibers. Then take a clean cloth and wipe the surface, pressing firmly as you wipe. The dirt will then be absorbed by the cloth.
Step 2:
After you have cleaned the ceiling, clean it again with the mold remover, Mold Remover .
First spray on the folds and seams where you have previously scraped off dirt, this is often where mould forms. Then spray the entire surface with Mould Remover and leave to work for 10–15 minutes. Then wipe off the product with a clean cloth, being extra careful in folds and around seams.
Step 3:
Wet the ceiling lightly with clean water so that it is damp, you can do this by spraying the water on with a trigger spray bottle, or use a water hose that has a spray function. A damp surface allows the FabriCoat textile paint to penetrate the canvas better.
To apply FabricCoat fabric paint , shake the bottle well and then pour the paint into a bowl to make it easier to work with. Dip the included paint brush into the paint and brush onto the fabric. As you do this, the fabric will absorb the product and enhance the underlying color. It is best to start at the edges and work inwards.
Let the ceiling dry for one hour. If necessary, apply a second coat in the same way as the first.
Once you are happy with the color, let it dry overnight.
Step 4:
When the paint is dry on the surface, it is time for the final step of staining; impregnation with Fabric Protector . The impregnation forms an invisible barrier on the canvas and protects against fading, makes the surface water-repellent, and makes it more difficult for dirt, stains, bird droppings, etc. to adhere and is easy to wash off.
First brush the ceiling with the cleaning brush to remove any dust or excess FabriCoat that has not completely sunk in.
Then spray Fabric Protector directly onto the roof surface, enough to make the surface look wet. Continue until the entire roof surface is covered.
Let it dry and your roof is ready to use.
