Here you will find our five best leather care tips that will help you keep your leather products (such as furniture and car interiors) looking good while also extending the life of the leather.
1) Protect the leather from day one
Whenever you buy something new, you want to keep it in new condition for as long as possible, and the best way is to maintain it preventively. This applies especially to products made of leather. It is common when you buy a new leather sofa or a new car with leather interior that it comes with a leather care kit. This usually contains a protective cream, and we recommend that you use this the first thing you do. The protective cream is applied on top of the leather and prevents staining and protects against daily wear and tear. It often also contains UV filters, a sun protection that prevents the leather from fading in the sun.
2) Clean the leather regularly
Whether your leather products are new or old, and whether you regularly apply a protective cream, you also need to clean the leather from time to time. For a quick wipe, a damp cloth will do, but a fine leather sofa and leather car interior will need a more thorough cleaning with the right products at least once a quarter to keep the leather in top condition. Regular leather care will extend the life of the leather.
3) Use only professional leather care products
Do not use wipes, vinegar, or other “housewife” products to clean leather furniture and car upholstery. Many of these products contain chemicals and agents that can cause drying, cracking, or discoloration. If you are wondering what to buy, take a look at our webshop. We offer a wide range of leather care products, including leather cleaners and protective creams . Our leather care kit comes in several sizes and contains leather cleaner, protective cream, and sponges to apply. Further down the page there is a selection.
4) Avoid heat and sunlight
To prevent color fading and other damage to the leather, try to avoid placing the furniture in direct sunlight and in front of radiators. The sun fades the color of the leather and heat can cause the leather to dry out, causing it to crack. To prevent leather from drying out, clean and protect the leather once a quarter. Our protective cream not only prevents stains from setting in, it also acts as a softening conditioner. The protective cream also has a UV filter with a high sun protection factor, which means that the leather does not fade as quickly.
5) Avoid excessive skin contact
This may seem a bit odd, but natural oils from the skin, as well as oils, moisturizers and other skin products, can damage and break down the leather, causing discoloration and even cracks! Protective cream helps, but also cushions, blankets and covers can be both decorative and help protect your leather.
